Born 1942 in Jamshedpur, Jahar Dasgupta went to Kala Bhavan, Shantiniketan at the age of 19. He had among his teachers, illustrious artists like Nandalal Bose, Ramkinkar Baij and Binod Behari Mukherjea. He passed out in 1964. Since passing out, he has been living and working in Kolkata.
Nature, like many artists, is the inspiration behind his art. Woman is also an integral part of his works. His use of color is as forthright and bright as seen in nature. The striking feature of his paintings is a dreamy and soft feel, forming a complete empathy with the subject of his drawing. The artist in Jahar Dasgupta is not isolated from the world around him. The human angst agitates and stirs his senses. He searches for a way out through his paintings.
His major exhibitions in India have been held at Lalit Kala Academy, India Habitat Centre, Lokayata Art Gallery and Elements Art gallery in New Delhi; Jehangir Art Gallery, Kamalnayan Bajaj Art Gallery and Prince of Wales Museum in Mumbai; Laxmana Art Gallery in Hyderabad, Academy of Fine Arts, Chitrakut Art Gallery, Birla Academy, Chemould Art Gallery and Samokal Art Gallery in Kolkata..
